English

The Riley English Department takes pride in the fact that our high school is named for a poet-- Indiana's own James Whitcomb Riley. Our devotion to Language Arts extends from that point. We in the English Department are responsible for every single student enrolled at Riley. Every school day for all four of their years in high school, students walk through the door of an English classroom. We enrich required readings of The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Crucible, and Of Mice and Men, and we hold students accountable for the writing standards of the Modern Language Association (MLA) that prepare our students for college and careers. In addition, the English Department produces the award-winning Riley Review newspaper and the Hoosier Poet yearbook. We could look to the past to herald distinguished literary graduates, including Larry Karaszewski, Daniel Waters and Mark Waters, but we prefer to look forward. We anticipate a world changed by the gifts that Riley students will bring to our community and the world beyond.
